GOD BLESS AMERICA
How were we so blind? We were ignorant to what was going on around us, all the times we made jokes or shrugged it off opting to ignore what was happening rather than do anything about it.. Even as it was happening we acted as if nothing had changed. Now our world is crumbling down, once lively towns now sit in ruins, houses that held families now abandoned and empty, windows broken and furniture torn, lives destroyed.
The smoke in the air was so thick that we choke on it in and coughed it up constantly. The water polluted as well, all around me were the other others who hadn’t seen the signs or were too slow. Their clothes were tattered, covered in dirt and blood along with other things. People screamed and cried, so many had been lost as payment for our sins, the eyes of those around me were haunted, forever filled with horror and sadness. We all went silent the moment we heard it, their chants echoed over the screaming of sirens, their footsteps in sync as they stomped atop the broken glass and corpses.
Historical buildings had been torn apart brick by brick, graffitied with the same words being chanted in the distance, some agreeing and begging for forgiveness, others contradicting them in a vain attempt to rebel until the end. Fires blazed all around us tearing away at the forests where people had tried to hide growing bigger by the moment, despite the cold of the winter air and the falling snow. It was obvious culprit behind the smoky air.
These were the traitors who sold their souls to the demon who caused this all! While we were broken and dirt covered they were sitting on top of the world and freshly pressed, while we had lost our homes theirs got bigger. I squeezed my eyes shut tight as I could, it was only a matter of minutes now. I had long since given up, I laid on the hard littered ground waiting for them to come for me, amongst the fires and smoke their smiling faces could be seen, torn up flags clutched tightly in their hands, their words more clear than ever “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” they chanted over and over and over, with them were children far too young to understand what was going on, they sang songs that held America in a high pedestal it didn’t deserve. They were brainwashed into this way of thinking, not knowing right from wrong, to them this was a fun game. When they finally stopped in front of me they went silent, the singing and chanting fell from their lips instead replaced with those sickly sweet grins they had plastered on. I heard the howling wind scream in agony that I was too scared to release, the screeching sirens finally the loudest thing to be heard in this wasteland we had once called home.
It wasn’t like this at first, it was premeditated and slow. First was the wall, it wasn’t built to keep other out, it was to keep us in. Over the course of weeks ties with allies had been severed, jobs plummeted and stock markets crashed. Millions were left without jobs or money, no one had stopped once to listen to their cries. I fucked up, I could’ve changed this all! So many of us could have prevented this! All it took was one vote and maybe we wouldn’t be shuffling about in a state that I’d barely call living. It was too late now.
They didn’t have room for people like me in this land of ruins, they picked out the people who had opposed them and stomped them out like a bug under their feet. We were destined for this, singled out and forgotten all for what they claimed to be the greater good. “God bless America, the land of the free.” Were the last words I’d ever utter before even they were lost in the wind along with the hope we once had in the world.
